Having Fun, Honoring and Helping Others
Gophers Relay for Life
The U of M Women’s hockey team participated in American Cancer
Society’s “Relay for Life” last week at the U of M Fieldhouse.
The team participated in honor of their equipment manager
Bonnie Olein, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2005.
The group participated under two team names, “Shut Out Cancer”
and “Go4Bonnie”, and raised $5500, with the proceeds going to cancer
research. One-hundred forty-six teams participated in the overnight
walk around the U of M track to raise funds and cancer awareness,
and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease.
The event, opened this year by emcee Jason Davis, begins with a
lap around the track by survivors of the disease. Around midnight,
participants take a lap in the dark, in honor of those battling the
disease.
