UND cleared to sue NCAA over name change

Posted in: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:00 am

Fighting Sioux Keep Fighting

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education voted 8-0 last Thursday to allow the UND Fighting Sioux to continue their fight with the NCAA over their demand they change nicknames.

A recent NCAA policy prohibits use of nicknames and imagery that are considered “hostile and abusive Native American imagery”. The rule bars the “Fighting Sioux” (among others) from hosting or participating in NCAA championship events without changes to their nickname and logo.

The letters are long and detailed, but the “talking points” make the school’s case:

illegitimate, unfair, fundamentally irrational, arbitrary, capricious and harmful

The university maintains they have demonstrated state, tribal, and district support, and documented outside investigations from state and federal groups that make no such “hostile” finding.

Letter from UND President Charles Kupchella, to the NCAA’s Myles Brand and Bernard Franklin. (June 7, 2006)

NCAA Sr VP Bernard Franklin’s statement (2005).

What do you think?
