BOYS HOCKEY: Whitehawks tame Tigers

FINAL: MOUND 5, HUTCHINSON 1
The Whitehawk hockey team posted their first season victory Friday night, with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Hutchinson Tigers at Hutchinson arena.
The Whitehawks got a hat-trick from senior Captain Danny Grady and a goal from senior Captain Erik Lee in notching their first victory. Zach Van Dyne was in net for the Whitehawks.
The Whitehawks started flat and the pace of the game was slow and deliberate. The Tigers killed a tripping penalty at 2:54, and the Whitehawks killed a high-sticking penalty at 6:40. Mound picked up another high sticking penalty at 12:15 and were two seconds shy of killing it off, when Dan Grady picked up the puck in the neutral zone, split two defenders, and found the top-left corner for a short-handed goal and a 1-0 Whitehawk lead.
The first period ended Whitehawks 1, Tigers 0.
In the second period, Hutchinson’s Andy McPherson scored at 5:42 to tie the game 1-1. Mound responded with good intensity and controlled the puck much of the period in the Hutch zone.
Whitehawk Dan Grady picked up his second goal of the night and eventual game-winner at 7:03 to give Mound a 2-1 lead.
At 8:31, sophomore Jack Thaler made it 3-1 Whitehawks with his first prep goal on an assist from Matt Myers.
After a Tiger penalty for interferance at 11:53, the Whitehawks Dan Grady picked up the hat-trick and power play goal on an assist from Cory Kasprzak at 13:10.
The second period ended Whitehawks 4, Tigers 1.
The lone goal in the third period was scored by Erik Lee at 9:56, assisted by Riley Horgan and Danny Grady to make it 5-1 Whitehawks.
