Varsity Hockey
FINAL: SHAKOPEE 4, MOUND 2

The Whitehawk varsity gave up two power-play goals, and two goals late in the third period to fall 4-2 to the Shakopee Sabers Tuesday night at Shakopee Arena.

The game was the first meeting between the teams since Shakopee’s 2-1 decision in last year’s Section 6A Final game. Mound came into the contest 0-3, while Shakopee was an undefeated 3-0. Jake Gyllen was in net for the Whitehawks.

Neither team scored in the first period. The action was fast-paced, the Whitehawks moved the puck well, and both teams had chances to score. Mound controlled the puck much of the period, but did not tally.

In the second period, a series of penalties resulted in a power-play goal by the Sabers’ Chris Huth at 5:52.

Mound killed off another pair of penalties, and Phillip Dunn tied the game on an assist from Riley Horgan at 15:11. The second period ended tied 1-1.

At 3:18 of the third period, Mound’s Erik Lee took a penalty for cross-checking, and just 18 seconds later, Shakopee’s Chris Huth scored his second power-play goal of the night, assisted by Jason Rein, to give the Sabers a 2-1 lead.

At 6:51, Mound’s Tim Niccum tied the game at 2-2 on a nice assist from Riley Horgan.

At 12:34, Shakopee’s Calvin Simon scored what ended up the game-winner on a pass from Jason Rein.

At 13:32, Rein scored the game’s final goal on an assist from Chris Huth.
