HOCKEY: Border Battle

This weekend, the Wisconsin Badgers (11-2-2 overall) bring their Nation’s #1 ranking to Mariucci Arena for a weekend series against the #4 Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Wisconsin rolls into town with the WCHA’s best defense, allowing just 1.4 goals per game, and a 12-game unbeaten streak. The Gophers boast the WCHA’s best offense, scoring 3.8 goals per game, and the nation’s hottest power play, scoring on the advantage 23.5% of the time.

Not ready to call a winner? It gets better… The Badgers are trying to end a 10-game losing streak at Mariucci Arena. Bucky has not tasted victory on Minnesota soil since 2000. Both Friday and Saturday night’s games will be televised on FSN North (7:00 pm start)

Chisago Lakes took advantage of an abundance of Mound miscues, and handed the Whitehawks a 5-4 loss in their season home opener Tuesday night at Pond Arena.

Period 1

Chisago Lakes took just 13 seconds to take the lead when Lance Baumgard scored off the opening face-off on Whitehawk goaltender Zach VanDyne.

Mound’s Erik Lee took a hooking penalty, and Chisago Lakes’ Terry Bergren scored a power play goal 5:15 into the period to make the lead 2-0 Wildcats.

At 6:40, Riley Horgan scored his first prep goal with help from Philip Dunn and Jamie Johnson, cutting the Chisago lead to 2-1.

The period ended 2-1 Chisago Lakes. Mound outshot the Wildcats 13-8 in the period.

Period 2

At 3:16 in the second session, Tim Niccum scored on an assist from Riley Horgan to tie the game 2-2.

At 4:57, Chisago’s Ross Jones scored top-shelf from in front of the net on an assist by DJ Haus. Chisago regained a 3-2 advantage.

The second period ended 3-2 Wildcats. Mound outshot the Wildcats 16-13 in the period.

Period 3

Mound’s Tim Niccum took a roughing penalty, and at 9:35 in the third period, Chisago’s Scott Liebsch scored another Wildcat power play goal on an assist from Zack Stimson. Wildcats 4, Whitehawks 2.

At 11:53, Mound’s Dan Grady scored on an assist from Philip Dunn to make the score 4-3.

Chisago scored an empty-net goal at 16:18 to make the score 5-3 Wildcats.

Mound’s Jamie Johnson scored on an assist from Riley Horgan at 16:52. The game ended Chisago Lakes 5, Mound 4.

Mound had 10 shots in the third period for a three-period total of 39. Chisago had 5 shots in the third period for a three-period total of 26.

Zach VanDyne made 21 saves for the Whitehawks.

Mound travels Friday to Duluth for a pair of weekend games against Iron Mountain/Buhl and Duluth Denfeld.

GIRLS HOCKEY: Cambridge 3, Mound 1

The Mound Girls Varsity fell 3-1 to the Cambridge-Isanti Blue Jackets Saturday at Pond Arena. The loss drops the Mound girls to 2-1 on the season. Cambridge is now 2-0.
