Olympic “1980 Rink” renamed
“Herb Brooks Arena”

February 22 marked the 25th Anniversary of the United States “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union, when the U.S. upset a dominant Soviet team 4-3 in the medal round of the 1980 Olympics.

February 24 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Gold Medal game against Finland. The U.S. trailed 2-1 heading into the third period, when they rallied for three goals in the third to take the Gold Medal.

Several events commemorated the anniversaries this week. On February 22, a celebration marked the exact minute of the victory (7:26pm). The team was introduced, video highlights of the game were shown on a Big Screen, and attendees counted down the last 11 seconds of the game, including Al Michaels now famous “Do You Believe In Miracles”?

On February 23, a ceremony was held at Lake Placid’s “1980 Rink”, where it was renamed “Herb Brooks Arena”, in honor of their late coach.
