“Hockey Just for Fun”
My gift for you at Christmas time,
a precious, simple one.
I pray that all your hockey games,
will someday be for fun.
No hockey boards, no indoor rinks,
no fans or referees.
Just you, your friends,
a pair of skates,
an icy winter breeze.
You’ll skate and pass,
you’ll check and score,
the fun will never cease.
No slashing at the goalie’s head
while standing in the crease.
The other team will sometimes win,
and talk like they were pros,
but never will you raise your fists,
or break another’s nose.
I know that you will all play hard,
and try your best to win,
but playing hard and losing still,
will never be a sin.
The goal, you see, is not the pros,
but learning how to live,
the goalie’s more important
than calling him a “sieve”.
So go play hard,
give all you’ve got,
You’ll know when you are done,
You just enjoyed a precious gift…
