Do You Believe in Miracles? Or What?
It’s that time of year again, when hockey moms and dads skate on thin ice. Not because daytime temps still climb into the 60’s. Not because uncaring skaters leave the rink doors open. End of summer signals the beginning of hockey registration and tryouts.
To the rest of us, this is a time of great anticipation. A new coach. A new season. New skates. A new stick. Clean-smelling hockey equipment. What’s not to love?
But not to parents on thin ice. The season appears lost before the first puck drops. Who cares if Johnny can’t read? He must move up to Squirts. Bobby simply will not play for Coach “AAA”. Suzy will only play in the district if she moves up. If my son doesn’t travel this year, whatever will we do?
Get a life. Let your kids live their own. Be the parent.
If Johnny blows out a knee, knowing how to read will help kill time during rehab. If Bobby plays for Coach “AAA”, maybe he will learn what it means to get along with others. If Suzy does not move up, maybe she will learn what it means to be a leader.
My best memory ever of Thomas Vanek was ON THE BENCH. Nate Miller and Gino Guyer are even better people OFF THE ICE. Eric Strobel gave his 1980 Olympic gold medal to a bunch of people HE NEVER MET, so they could see it and touch it.
What if it were stolen? I don’t know Eric, but I suspect I know what he would say.
Take the high road. Have some faith. Have some fun. Expect a miracle.
Every journey is as much about the ride as the destination.
Pick a destination and work hard to get there. But enjoy the ride too.
Chill out. It makes for better ice.
