Boys Hockey: Paul Willett Resigns

White Hawk Boys Hockey

Willett Moves On

Earlier this year, the Owatonna Express played their last game
in Owatonna and moved to the Detroit area. Chicago businessman
Barry Soskin is bringing a new NAHL franchise – The Albert Lea
Thunder, to Albert Lea City Arena for the 2008-09 season.

Soskin also owns two other Junior A teams in Canonsburg, PA and
Jamestown, NY, and was part owner of the USHL’s Waterloo
Black Hawks for four years.

… below is a portion of the email Willett sent to hockey players
and parents … The “summer info” portion of the email
has been edited out as not relevant to this story…

From: Paul Willett
Subject: My resignation / summer info

Dear Whitehawk HS Hockey Parents,

As I’m sure most of you have heard by now, on Friday afternoon I submitted my resignation as Head Boys’ Hockey Coach at Mound Westonka HS. I have accepted a position as the head coach of the Albert Lea Thunder, a Junior “A” expansion team in the North American Hockey League. It’s a wonderful opportunity for me and my family and something that I could not pass up, although making the decision to leave Mound is one of the toughest things I’ve ever had to do.

I would like to take this opportunity to say “thanks” to all of you for giving me the privilege of working with your kids, whether it has been during the season or in our summer camp. As the head coach at Mound, I’ve been blessed with great kids and great families to work with. That has made it easy for me as a coach. I’m proud of what has been accomplished during the past four years and I know that the program will continue to improve in the future.

.. clipped info about Summer STP program ..

I’ll be making an attempt to speak with many of you individually prior to my family making the move to Albert Lea so that I can say thanks and good-bye in a more personal manner. Although, good-bye is probably not a proper term since you will still see me at the occasional Whitehawk game, scouting players and cheering on my old team. Thanks for your support of the program (even if you didn’t always agree with some of my decisions) and please offer that support to the new coach.

.. clipped phone number to call with questions ..

Thanks,

Paul Willett
