IIHF 100th Anniversary

photo: Sports Illustrated

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is celebrating their
100th Anniversary (1998-2008) this year.

At the IIHF Gala Dinner in Quebec City, the IIHF honored the
1980 U.S. Olympic team’s “Miracle on Ice” as the top
international hockey story of the century.

Selections were based on their influence on international hockey,
and their impact on hockey at the highest levels of the sport
(the Olympics, World Championships, NHL, etc.)

Interestingly enough, the Soviets 8-1 defeat of Canada in 1981
(one year later) was #9 on the list.
It was the most shocking defeat
Canada has ever had in an international title game.
